The people at the Free Open Source Mac User Group have eighteen different applications that you can run from external storage on your Mac with another nine apps being worked on. And these are some of the more popular OS X Open Source apps, things you might actually use.

They make this work by using an unmodified version of the application and including an AppleScript that is used to launch it from its portable location. You install the app by copying its folder over to the external storage and that is it! As long as you don't modify the contents of the folder, the application should work fine. To launch the app, click on 'OPEN Portable app name' and the AppleScript will launch in the background, starting the application.Be prepared for the apps to take a little longer to start and do remember that any data or passwords stored using KeyChain are not portable; that stays on the Mac.

And while the support forum hasn't been updated in several months, these are worth a look if you're needing to keep applications portable to use on several different Macs.
